A common need many exotic pets have is access to toys, including wood and other natural materials, to stimulate their minds and alleviate boredom. For exotic pets that are rodents (like rats, chinchillas, and rabbits), their teeth are always growing so they have a compulsion to chew to wear their teeth down. You want to give your pets a healthy outlet to play and wear down their teeth, and that’s often achieved by providing toys and wood chews.
Unfortunately, because all exotic pets are different and have different needs, the wood that is safe for each species of pets is also different. When shopping for toys, cage accessories, and wood chews for your exotic pet, you should reference an animal specific list of what materials are safe and which items are toxic and should be avoided.
We have separate articles for each type of exotic pet listed below. While we tried to make each list as extensive and complete as possible, there may be items you’re considering that are not included on our lists. We always recommend erring on the side of caution or consulting with your exotics veterinarian before buying toys, accessories, or any other items for your pet.
